NUTRITIONAL PROGRAMME FOR ADOLESCENT GIRLS

In pursuance of Prime Minister’s Independence Day Speech-2001, a pilot project has been launched by the Planning Commission under which foodgrains are provided to the family of the identified undernourished adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating mothers @ 6 kg. of foodgrains per head per month in two of the backward districts in each of the major States and most populous districts (excluding the capital district) in remaining smaller States/UTs.

A quantity of 0.62 lakh MT of foodgrains was allocated to States/UTs during 2002-03 under the Scheme. During 2003-04, annual allocation of 2.51 lakhs MT of foodgrains (wheat & rice) has been made under the scheme. Out of these allocations, 0.11 lakh MT  and 0.63 lakh MT of foodgrains  were lifted by States/UTs during 2002-03 and 2003-04 respectively.  For lifting the balance quantity of foodgrains pertaining to 2003-04,  the proposal received from State Governments  for revalidation of foodgrains is under consideration.

For its further continuance during 2004-05 and 2005-06, approval of Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is being obtained by Department of Women & Child Development.
