GRAIN BANK SCHEME

 The scheme has recently been transferred to Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution from Ministry of Tribal Affairs on the directions of Prime Minister’s Office. The objective of the scheme is to establish Grain Banks in chronically food scarce areas.  An amount of Rs.32.50 crores is available for establishing Grain Banks under Annual Plan during 2005-06. Approximately 13,749 Grain Banks are proposed to be established during 2005-06 and 2006-07. Draft Cabinet Note on the scheme has been circulated to the concerned Ministries/Departments for their comments.

During the period from 1996-97 to 2003-04 1483 Grain Banks established /functioning in 11 States.  Following quantity of foodgrains have so far been allocated under the scheme for various States through Ministry of Tribal Affairs:
