SYLLABUS

Syllabus for long term training course on Scientific methods of foodgrain storage, Insepection and Pest control at INDIAN GRAIN STORAGE MANAGEMENT AND RESERACH INSTITUTE, HAPUR & FIELD STATIONS.

A. STORAGE
  1. General problems of storage and Inspection of foodgrains.
  2. Country's food policy and different methods of procurements and distribution of foodgrains.
  3. Sources and detection of infestation in stored foodgrains.
  4. Causes, types and extent of deterioration of storage of foodgrains and methods to check them.
  5. Traditional and modern methods of bag and bulk storage.
  6. Insect pests of stored grain and milled products - their identification, biology, nature and damage and detection.
  7. Chemical and non-chemical and integrated methods of controlling stored grain insect pests.
  8. Vertebrate pests and their control.
  9. Toxic contamination in foodgrain, their ill-effects and estimation.
  10. Pesticides, their formulations - physical, chemical and biological properties, methods of handling, application and factors affecting their efficiency.
  11. Pesticidal contamination, tolerance limits residues, antidotes and precautions for safe handling of pesticides.
  12. Cleaning aeration and drying of stored products and at farmers, commercial, Government and Semi Government levels.
  13. Principles of godown construction and other storage structure and their specifications etc.
  14. Protection of stored produce from moisture by use of dunnage, different types of dunnage and their merits and demerits.
  15. Role of moisture in spoilage of stored grain, Measurement of moisture content in foodgrains/milled products.
  16. Categorisation of foodgrains for storage, loss measurement and disposal.
  17. Godown management and code of storage practices.
  18. Philosophy and set up of IGMRI and SGC.
  19. Warehousing in India.
  20. Role and use of stacking, stack cards, analysis, silos etc.
  21. Principles of godown sanitation and hygiene.
  22. General regulations applicable to grain stockists.

  1. Production and utilisation of foodgrains in the country.

  4. Milling, processing, packing of foodgrains and their produces.
  5. Handling and transportation of foodgrains.
  6. Marketing practices of foodgrains and their procedure in India.
  7. Procedure for inspection of foodgrains, terminology, necessity and utility.
  8. Grading of foodgrains, its necessity and utility.
  9. Grain quality, its maintenance and estimation, during storage of foodgrains, e.g. categorisation, classification, grade designation, etc.
  10. Specifications and assessment of price with reference to quality.
  11. Damaged grains their categorisation, utilisation and disposal procedures.
  12. Maintenance of Godown accounts and book-keeping.
  13. Consumer protection Act and its importance.
